Mbappe's Ballon d'Or Bid Hinges on a 22-Goal World Cup Record
The Real Madrid forward relies on an all-time international scoring mark to offset a trophyless 2025-26 season in the race for football's top individual prize.

Kylian Mbappe enters the Ballon d'Or ceremony in London on Monday with a distinct advantage in individual statistics but a deficit in team success. The French forward is not the bookmakers' favorite, nor was he the top scorer in every competition last season. Yet he has aggressively promoted his case, betting that his record-breaking goal tally will outweigh the absence of silverware.
The 2025-26 season, which defines the eligibility period for the award, ended without a trophy for Mbappe at either the club or international level. Real Madrid finished second in La Liga and were eliminated from the Champions League by Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals. France also fell short at the 2026 World Cup in North America, placing fourth after losses to Spain in the semifinals and England in the third-place playoff.
Mbappe's primary argument rests on his performance at the World Cup. He became the all-time leading scorer in the tournament's history, finishing with 22 goals in 22 matches. This total places him ahead of Lionel Messi, who has 21, and Miroslav Klose, who has 16. Mbappe also won the Golden Boot at the tournament, marking the second consecutive time he has claimed that honor.
The forward highlighted the historical weight of this achievement in an interview last month. He stated that overtaking the legends of the past in the most important tournament in sport is a factor that stands out. When asked directly who he was voting for, he replied, "Myself."
His individual form extended beyond the international stage. At Real Madrid, Mbappe finished as La Liga's top scorer with 25 goals. He also led the scoring charts in the Champions League with 15 goals. He described his season as a strong year for the award, noting that he was the top scorer in the biggest competitions.
The lack of titles remains the central weakness in his bid. Rival candidates have stronger trophy cases. Lamine Yamal won the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with Barcelona. Harry Kane of Bayern Munich collected three trophies last term, including the Bundesliga title. These achievements align with the recent trend of winners securing major team honors.
Over the past decade, every Ballon d'Or recipient lifted at least one trophy in the year of the award. Ousmane Dembele, the 2025 winner, helped Paris Saint-Germain to their first Champions League title. Rodri won Euro 2024 with Spain and the Premier League with Manchester City before receiving the prize two years ago. This pattern makes a trophyless victory an anomaly in the modern era.
Mbappe appears unfazed by the historical odds. He told radio station RFI that the award announces a player, not a team. He argued that individual performance and memorable moments are what voters consider for this specific prize. His manager, Jose Mourinho, has also voiced support, stating that the person who made history this summer is not from Paris Saint-Germain or the Spanish national team.
There is one precedent for a winner without a major trophy in the last 15 years. Cristiano Ronaldo won the award in 2013 after Real Madrid finished as league runners-up and Portugal failed to advance past the World Cup playoffs. Ronaldo scored 66 goals that season and ended Lionel Messi's four-year winning streak. Mbappe, who received his ninth nomination and finished third in 2023, faces a similar, though historically rare, path to victory.
