Bayern Munich’s head coach Vincent Kompany will be sidelined for several weeks, the club confirmed on Saturday. The 40-year-old manager is currently in a hospital receiving treatment for a virus. Director of Sport Max Eberl described Kompany’s condition as stable but noted that medical examinations are still ongoing to determine the specific nature of the illness. No definitive recovery schedule has been established yet.

The absence follows a sudden collapse on the training pitch on Friday. Eberl stated that the club is prioritizing a clear understanding of the medical issue before discussing return-to-play timelines. He emphasized that the recovery period will be measured in weeks rather than days. The club has decided not to seek a postponement for Sunday’s Bundesliga match against Freiburg. Instead, Eberl believes a strong performance and a positive result would be the best way to support Kompany’s recovery.

Assistant coach Aaron Danks will take charge of the team for the upcoming match. Danks led the Saturday news conference in Kompany’s absence. He explained that he spoke briefly with Kompany on Friday to check on his health, ensuring no football-related discussions took place. Danks said the coaching staff will work together as a team to maintain the club’s momentum. He noted that all football operations are currently under the management of the assistant coaching group.

The virus initially surfaced last week. Kompany returned to the dugout for Wednesday’s home match against Arsenal despite missing the pre-match press conference due to illness. He admitted afterward that he ignored early warning signs. He described the virus as nasty and acknowledged that he did not listen to his body until it forced him to stop. Bayern’s second team match on Friday was postponed following the collapse.

Germany international Joshua Kimmich will also miss the Freiburg game. Danks confirmed that Kimmich has been on bereavement leave since Tuesday. The absence adds to the squad’s challenges as they prepare for the match. Bayern Munich currently leads the Bundesliga table by one point over Freiburg. The team is focused on maintaining their position at the top of the standings.

The next major fixture for Bayern Munich is a Champions League match scheduled for November 3. The team will travel to Madrid to face Atletico Madrid. The coaching staff and players will aim to secure a result that stabilizes their lead in the domestic league before turning their attention to European competition. The medical team will continue to monitor Kompany’s progress in the hospital.
