Two boys were swept away by a powerful current while snorkelling near the southern tip of Bimini, triggering a fatal rescue attempt by their mother.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force confirmed that the 36-year-old woman, who is believed to be from Stapleford in Nottinghamshire, was found unresponsive at the North Bimini Ferry Dock shortly after 10 a.m. on Tuesday.
Officers at the Alice Town police station received the call and rushed to the scene. By the time they arrived, the woman had already been transported to a local clinic for medical treatment.
Police stated that a local doctor pronounced her dead at the facility despite efforts to revive her. The force reported that she was pulled from the water and taken to the ferry dock, where bystanders administered CPR before her arrival at the clinic.
The incident began when the woman was snorkelling with her husband and their two sons. When the current carried the children away, she swam toward them and was subsequently swept off as well. Both boys were later rescued from the water.
The police force said foul play is not suspected and an autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. A Foreign Office spokesperson noted that officials are in contact with local authorities and are providing support to the family.
