A 36-year-old British woman has died in the Bahamas after a strong current swept her away while she attempted to rescue her two sons during a snorkeling trip. The incident took place on Tuesday near the southern tip of North Bimini, prompting an immediate investigation by the Royal Bahamas Police Force.

Police reports indicate that the woman was in the water with her husband and their two children when a powerful current carried the boys away. As she struggled to reach them, the force stated that the woman was also swept from the shallow area. The two sons were subsequently recovered from the water. The woman was found unresponsive at the North Bimini ferry dock shortly after 10:00 a.m., where bystanders had already administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Officers from the Alice Town police station responded to the dock and found the woman had been transferred to the local clinic for medical care. A doctor at the facility pronounced her dead despite resuscitation efforts. The police force noted that foul play is not suspected in the incident. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the precise cause of death.

The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed it is monitoring the situation. A spokesperson noted that officials are coordinating with local authorities and providing assistance to the bereaved family. The department expressed its condolences to the relatives of the deceased.

North Bimini is part of a small archipelago situated between Andros, the largest island in the Bahamas, and the US state of Florida. The location serves as the closest point in the Bahamian territory to the American mainland. The islands are historically associated with writer Ernest Hemingway and currently host a major center for shark research.

The family had been enjoying a recreational outing in the area when the conditions turned hazardous. The police statement emphasized that the primary focus is now on supporting the family while the medical examination proceeds.
