South Korea test-fired a hypersonic ballistic missile five days after North Korea launched a tactical nuclear-capable missile, marking a sharp escalation in the regional arms race. President Lee Jae Myung observed the South Korean launch, a response The New York Times described as a signal of growing unease over Pyongyang’s rapid military progress.

The North Korean missile tested in early October flew approximately 700 kilometers, according to estimates from South Korea and Japan. Pyongyang claimed a range of 1,000 kilometers for the weapon. Seoul typically responds to such tests with brief statements calling them provocative, but this time it matched the launch with its own hypersonic strike.

Analyst Anton Ponomarenko said access to Russian deployment data and feedback has improved the accuracy and maneuverability of North Korean weapons. He described the threat to South Korea as more substantial due to these upgrades. The cooperation stems from a renewed military partnership formed after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

North Korea has begun mass-producing attack drones with Russian support. The New York Times reported that Moscow is passing military developments to Pyongyang in exchange for soldiers, workers, and weapons. Pyongyang has observed in Ukraine and the Middle East how inexpensive drones can overwhelm costly air defense systems.

In a drill last month, a North Korean drone swarm attacked a target island while cruise and ballistic missiles struck from different directions simultaneously. The newspaper argued that these evolving tactics will force South Korea and its allies to redesign their air defenses at exorbitant cost.

Other recent reports detail the scale of the partnership. Bloomberg reported in September that up to 25,000 North Korean citizens are working at Russian military plants, including facilities in Alabuga, Tatarstan, to produce military drones. A North Korean missile unit capable of deploying 120 ballistic missiles and six launchers has also begun moving into western Russia.

Ukrainska Pravda previously reported that Russia requested KN-30 ballistic missiles from North Korea in August. In June 2026, Pyongyang announced tests of a modernized 240mm multiple-launch rocket system, a tactical ballistic missile, and a 155mm long-range artillery shell.
