Queensland police received a report at 8:15 p.m. on Saturday that a vehicle had discharged shots near a licensed venue in Loganholme, a suburb located south of Brisbane.
Officers arrived at Fitzys Loganholme on Bryants Road, which was hosting the Logan City Titles Fight Night. The four individuals injured in the incident were transported to a hospital, where medical staff are currently assessing their conditions.
Deputy Commander Chris Stream of Queensland police characterized the scene as confronting. He confirmed to the Today program that multiple attendees sustained gunshot wounds. Police noted that a vehicle was observed leaving the scene after the shooting began.
Jon Raven, the mayor of Logan, stated that residents in the area are frightened by the event. Raven described the incident as a shockwave that the city has not experienced before. He expressed solidarity with the victims, the venue staff, and the attendees.
Raven noted that he has attended similar events in the past and viewed them as family-friendly environments where many children are present. He remarked that this incident would impact those children for the rest of their lives.
The mayor explained that the event was organized to help steer young people away from violence. He said the organizer uses boxing to empower and reconnect youth who might otherwise go off the rails. Raven added that the current situation is the opposite of what the organizer intended.
Logan City Titles issued a statement on social media on Sunday morning. The organizers described the event as a community showcase for local talent and hard work inside the ring. The statement read that such incidents have no place in the boxing community or any part of the broader community.
Police have not yet apprehended the offenders. Officers stated they do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the public. They are urging anyone with information about the shooting to contact them.
