The office of Melania Trump announced on Friday that the first lady has secured a temporary ceasefire for Oleshky, a Russian-occupied city in southern Ukraine. The agreement halts military action to allow humanitarian aid and civilian evacuation. The announcement credits Mrs. Trump, rather than President Donald Trump or other senior officials, with brokering the deal.

The truce is set to begin on Thursday, October 29. It will last for six days. During this period, non-military civilian leaders from both Russia and Ukraine will visit residents to assess their needs. Those wishing to leave will receive coordinated transportation to either Russia or Ukraine. Mrs. Trump stated that Newsmax will document the efforts of both teams.

In a statement, the first lady described Oleshky as a front-line city on the brink of disaster. She said the remaining population consists mostly of elderly residents who need medicine, food, and clean water. Mrs. Trump claimed that without her intervention, bringing in aid and evacuating these civilians would have been impossible. Her office said she acted in her formal role as Exclusive Intermediary.

The timeline for the agreement began last week with a phone call between Pope Leo and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The pope expressed deep concern about the humanitarian situation in Oleshky during that conversation. Mrs. Trump has also previously worked to reunite 34 children with their families after they were forcibly removed by Russia.

Neither Russia nor Ukraine has publicly commented on the announcement yet. However, Ukrainian officials indicated that a tentative agreement has been reached for the occupied territory. White House communications director Steven Cheung called the development amazing news on X. He described it as a major, positive step toward peace and said history will remember the first lady's work.

The announcement comes as President Trump's broader efforts to end the war have stalled. He had said he would end the conflict on his first day back in office. In recent days, he has grown frustrated with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Trump suggested Ukraine should have a new leader and dismissed concerns about Russian military actions. He told reporters earlier this week that Russia has been fine on Ukraine and has not been doing much.
